Do you always know when to use 'is' or 'are'?

1. The box of pens is/are on the table.
2. The herd of cattle is/are in the field.
3. The pencil cases is/are in the bag.
4. The toffee apples is/are on the shelf.
5. The jar of coins is/are in the cupboard.

Remember we use 'is' for singular and we use 'are' for plural.

1. The box of pens is/are on the table.
The box of pens IS on the table. (There is only one box)

2. The herd of cattle is/are in the field.
The herd of cattle IS in the field. (There is only one herd)

3. The pencil cases is/are in the bag.
The pencil cases ARE in the bag. (There are several pencil cases)

4. The toffee apples is/are on the shelf.
The toffee apples ARE on the shelf. (There are several toffee apples)

5. The jar of coins is/are in the cupboard.
The jar of coins IS in the cupboard. (There is only one jar)
