Pemakaian Not Only .... But Also (tidak hanya ...... tetapi juga)

Not Only .... But Also yang juga merupakan correlative conjunction atau paired conjunction. Not only ... but also mempunyai makna tidak hanya...tetapi juga.

Berikut ini contoh-contoh pemakaian not only … but also:

He’s not only clever, but also he’s brave.

(not only … but also, bisa dipakai untuk menghubungkan 2 clauses/kalimat, akan tetapi kedua clause tersebut haruslah pararel seperti contoh di atas: “he’s  clever” dan “ he’s brave”)

He’s not only funny but also intelligent.

(Pada contoh ini, not only …but also, menghubungkan dua kata sifat “funny dan  intelligent”)

Not only Shinta but also her brother is clever.

(pada contoh ini kita menggunkan verb “is”, dalam penentuan verbnya, tergantung pada kata setelah “but also”. Contoh lain bisa dilihat dibawah ini!)

1. Not only John but also his friends are clever.

2. Not only Tono but also John sweeps the floor.

3. Not only Tono but also his sisters sweep the floor. 

Jadi bila kata setelah but also itu singular, maka kita harus memasukan verb singular, jika plural maka harus sesuai untuk verb yang plural pula. Pada contoh 2 di atas, kata setelah but also adalah “John” oleh karena itu kata kerjanya haruslah sweeps yang mendapat penambahan “s”. Pada contoh 3, kata setelah but also adalah his sisters yang berbentuk plural, maka kata kerja sweep tidak boleh ditambah “s” (contoh-contoh ini berpola simple present tense).

Contoh lainnya:

Wrong: He not only painted the "Annunciation" but also [painted] the "Mona Lisa."
Right: He painted not only the "Annunciation" but also the "Mona Lisa."

Wrong: He not only played for Washington but also for Detroit and Pittsburgh.
Right: He played not only for Washington but also for Detroit and Pittsburgh.

Wrong: He not only coached soccer but also tennis.
Right: He coached not only soccer but also tennis.

Right: He taught not only physics and chemistry but also algebra and geometry.
